What is the Internet?

A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

When was it developed?

The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET used packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network.

Why was it developed?
The objective was to develop communication protocols which would allow networked computers to communicate transparently across multiple, linked packet networks. This was called the Internetting project and the system of networks which emerged from the research was known as the "Internet."

What is the WWW?
The World Wide Web (abbreviated as WWW or W3, commonly known as the Web) is a system of interlinked hypertext documents that are accessed via the Internet.

When was it developed?

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989, about 20 years after the first connection was established over what is today known as the Internet.

Why was it developed?

According to Tim Berners-Lee, he had a big idea in mind when he and Robert Cailliau invented the Web: a "common information space in which we communicate by sharing information."
However, at the time, Berners-Lee and Cailliau had a more immediate goal: to make it easier for nuclear physics researchers to share information.

Other Uses for the Internet

The internet has many uses not just email:

• access and evaluate current information
• download, collate and share relevant information
• participate in global projects
• work in a self-managed learning environment
• access experts in many fields
• provide useful information about your school
• communication
• education
• research
• financial transaction
• real time updates

Pros & Cons of the Internet

Pros Cons

Communication

You can talk to relatives/friends who you haven’t seen since childhood. Also important business conferences, in which you are unable to attend i.e. Skype.
You don’t know who you are speaking to, it could be a fake identity, pretending to be someone you now, in order to get personal information.

Information

It helps a lot with research and homework. Even just general browsing, for knowledge. The internet has lots of information from top scientists, mathematicians etc.
You don’t know who you are getting the information from. It could be completely wrong. Wikipedia, for example, can be edited by anybody, so you can’t always get reliable information.

Entertainment

You’ve had a long day at work, you want to come home and watch your favourite show? But it’s not on TV anymore, you can watch it online!
Often can ruin minds of kids. Information could be irrelevant, or they could be visiting unwanted entertainment sites.

Banking

Sites like PayPal have revolutionised the way we bank. Even just normal online banking is a great way to send money to people you know, or charities and organisations.
Lots of phishing scams are out there. Many will be in your email box every day, they look identical to the official ones. They can get all your banking details if you log into their site.
Shopping
Sites like Amazon and eBay, have made it much easier to buy what you want without going to the shop, often having much much cheaper prices. They also sell used, which attracts a lot of customers.

You don’t know what you are buying, there are con masterminds on these side and can con you £100s easily, it’s their daily work. They know the loopholes. Also you don’t know if they have messed with whatever you are buying, tampered with a phone etc.

Online gaming

Gaming CAN be a great free time activity, as long as you don’t over use it. You can meet some really nice people. It is a stress reliever for some people.
Teenagers are getting addicted and it’s not good. They over use video games, you can meet some really nasty people. And with everything online, lots of con men.

Distraction

Maybe there is no pro to this point, but there is one that comes close. If you suffer from anxiety/depression it can often be a way of distracting yourself from what is happening/making you uncomfortable.
You could be one page away from finishing your project, but… you found some cat videos!
Username
This is a great way to be able to hide your identity from thieves, it also gives you a personal touch!
Younger or older people, tend to use their full names, which can be dangerous, people can fake being you.
Cloud services
You don’t need to fill your device storage, you can upload it to the cloud where it is safe and sound.

It can often be very expensive for little amounts of storage. And because it is cloud, it can’t always be guaranteed to work, you could be in a conference desperately needing a file, but dropbox has stopped working.
